Module One: Leadership Development
Purpose
This module identifies the type of leadership that is required to create and maintain high levels of performance in organizations. Participants will examine these concepts from an individual, interpersonal, group, and organizational point of view. Participants will have a better understanding of their own leadership style, and will be encouraged to develop a personal leadership development plan.Module Objectives
- The participants will demonstrate the ability to read, write about, discuss, and understand the following issues of leadership in modern organizations.The definition of leadership; and the differences between managing and leading
- The nature of leadership and its importance for organizations.
- The principal contingency models of leadership; and the situational factors, which establish a leader’s effectiveness.
- The personal characteristics that are associated with effective leaders.
- The overall effectiveness of transactional and transformational leaders and their impact upon their followers and the organization.
- The development of effective leaders and a self-leadership culture within an organization.
- The ethical responsibility of leadership.

Module Two: Communication for Effective Leadership
Purpose
There will be a special emphasis on typical interpersonal and leadership relationships. The goal of this module is the maintenance of effective communications within the organization. Participants will examine these concepts from an individual, interpersonal, group and organizational point of view. Participants will have a better understanding of his/her own communication style, and will be encouraged to develop an action plan aimed at enhancing communications within the organization.Module Objectives
- The participants will demonstrate the ability to read, write about, discuss, and understand the following issues of effective leadership communication and conflict resolution in an organization crucial elements within the interpersonal communication process.
- Demonstrate various good listening techniques and good and bad listening habits.
- Understand and discuss the various types of nonverbal communication.
- Understand barriers to effective communication.
- Understand the theories of conflict management and resolution.
- Understand productive and non-productive conflict management styles.
- Understand the difference between passive-aggressive-and assertive styles.
- Apply the skills taught for conflict management and resolution.
- Recognize barriers to relationships in conflict.

Module Three: Leadership and Human Behavior in Organizations
Purpose
This module will explore the concepts that provide a foundation for the understanding of individual and group behavior in organizations, with special emphasis on interpersonal and leadership relationships. In addition, participants will examine the dynamics of motivation and its impact on performance within a culture. The concepts and practices discussed in this module will focus on the unique aspects of managing in the government sector and will directly apply to the CDC public health participants.
Module Objectives
The participants will demonstrate the ability to read, write about, discuss, and understand the following issues of leadership and human behavior in organizations.
- Understanding how organizational behavior affects leaders and organizational performance.
- Identifying alternative models of organizational behavior and their effects on personal and organizational performance.
- Understanding the nature, operations, and impact social systems (culture) within organizations.
- Examining the various motivational theories and models appropriately influence human behavior and organizational effectiveness.
- The nature of attitudes and their impact on job satisfaction.
- The importance of informal and formal groups within organizations.
- The life cycle of a team, ingredients of effective teams and potential challenges to team effectiveness.
- Determining how various leadership actions may reduce stress levels within organizations that lead to more effective performance levels.
